While you may not hear about adoption every day, it is, in fact, a very common occurrence. Most may not even realize that they have a friend who was or knows someone who was adopted. While many magazine headlines discuss celebrities that adopt children, there are many celebrities themselves who have adopted. Below are five stars that you may not have known were adopted!

 

Faith Hill: The country music superstar was placed for adoption by her birth parents who at the time couldn’t provide the proper care to her. A Mississippi couple with two sons of their adopted Faith and raised her in small town Mississippi. When Hill had grown, she decided to seek out her birth parents to learn more about her biological background. She eventually found her birth mother and reconnected with her. In an interview with Good Housekeeping Hill had this to say about her birth mother, “I have a lot of respect for my birth mother and no feelings of anger or any of that. I know she must have had a lot of love for me to give me what she felt was a better chance.”

 

John Lennon: Born in 1940 in Liverpool, UK, Lennon was raised by his aunt and uncle after his parents separated when he was just three years old. Unable to care for her son, Lennon’s birth mother had him taken in by his aunt and uncle. The late Lennon is, of course, now universally known as one of the best musicians of all time.

 

Nelson Mandela: At the age of 9, Mandela’s father passed away due to a lung disease. As a favor to his late father, Mandela was adopted by Cheif Jongintaba Dalinyebo who was acting regent of the Thembu people. Mandela received a high education from the chief.

 

Richard Burton: The famed Cleopatra and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf actor was born Richard Walter Jenkins in 1925. Burton was the twelve child of an impoverished coal miner. His mother passed away when he was only two years old, and he was taken in by a teacher named Philip Burton who would nurture Burton’s love of theatre. Philip eventually became Burton’s guardian.

Jamie Foxx: Born Eric Marlon Bishop in 1967, Foxx was adopted by his maternal grandparents after his birth parents separated. Foxx was then raised by his grandparents in Texas.
