Coping with the adoption process during the holidays can be tough.

It can be a rollercoaster ride of emotions.

For most people going through the process, it is on their mind every second. Many question how they can enjoy everyday life, let alone holidays, while their mind is preoccupied.

Here are 4 ways to cope with the adoption process during the holidays.

  1. Don’t change your plans/traditions

Although it is not easy, try not to change your plans or traditions that you participate in during the holidays.

With the adoption process there are many things you cannot control. Having consistency in your day-to-day life is important.

If you usually have a holiday party, do not cancel it. It might be a good way to give your mind a break from worrying.

  1. Involve yourself with family and friends

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, wanting to be alone can be a common reaction to a stress.

It is okay to admit you have anxiety during the adoption process. During most tough times we turn to our support systems.

In many cases, this would be our family and friends. Try not to push them away.

Being around family and friends might decrease your stress level and keep your mind off the things you cannot control.

  1. Help others

Try donating your time to people in need. It is really easy finding ways to help your community during the holiday season.

Sometimes helping others who need it can help you realize you aren’t the only one going through tough times.

Being able to help others might be the thing you need to cope with your own problems.

  1. Focus on the now

If you’re worrying about the future, you’re putting time and energy into something that doesn’t even exist. It hasn’t happened yet.

You might miss out on the great things that are happening in your life at the moment.

Try making a list of the things you are grateful for and focusing on it. Do not let your worries consume your thoughts but instead try to keep a positive outlook on your life.
